Paying tips

Do I need to register to pay a tip?

No!

Why do you ask for my email address?

We send a payment receipt to your email address.

Do payments go directly to the person(s) I am tipping?

No, tippl is not a peer-to-peer payments service. Much like in a restaurant or coffee shop your payment goes to the employer, who periodically disburses tips to their employees.

Do you pass on the full tip?

Yes!

Can they see who tipped them?

No. The recipient just sees the tip amount and date of payment.

When will they receive the tip?

It will show in their tippl account immediately. The money is not made available for a few days to ensure it can be returned to you if you made a mistake as per our returns policy. Thereafter the employer is obligated to disburse the money on their next scheduled pay date subject to reasonable payroll processing timelines.

What is the processing fee for?

We use the fee to cover the costs of making card payments. Every time you make a card payment the card companies charge a fee — that's how Visa and Mastercard make their millions. Card fees are normally included in the price of whatever you are buying. We can't do that (because you choose the amount, and we pass on the full tip), so we add the card fee on top. We clearly display the processing fee to you before payment.

How much is the processing fee?

The processing fee is typically 3.7 %. To be completely transparent, we clearly display the processing fee to you in dollars and cents before payment.

Why is the processing fee so high?

It's not! We're cheaper than Square. At the time of writing Square charge 2.8 % + 30¢ for card-not-present payments, whereas we charge 3.7 %. With pricing like Square you would pay 60 cents for a $10 tip (!), whereas with us you pay just 38 cents.

What will I see on my bank statement?

Your payment is made to the employer of the ultimate recipient, so the answer depends on who the tip is being paid to. We'll let you know what to expect to see on your bank statement during the checkout process, and also state this in your payment receipt.

Is my transaction secure?

Yes. Payment is made through a global payments infrastructure company who are PCI level 1 certified. This is the most stringent level of certification available in the payments industry. tippl does not store any of your personal details.

Can I tip someone if I didn't get their code?

Yes. You can find people who use tippl on their employers tippl page. Lookout for a "ti" icon on their website or in booking emails — this will link to their page listing staff members you can tip.

Can I get a refund?

Everyone makes mistakes, so we offer refunds within 5 days of you paying a tip. To request a refund just contact us with your order number and we'll process it as quickly as possible. For more information please see our terms and conditions.

Earning tips

Do I need to register to receive a tip?

Yes. When your employer signs you up you will receive an email asking you to sign in. When you sign in you will receive your unique easy-to-remember code that allows people to easily pay you a tip.

How can someone tip me?

Give them a link to your landing page (here's an example), a link to your personal payment page, or just give them your personal easy-to-remember 6 letter code. You could write it on a receipt, put it in an email, scrawl it on a pizza box, ... , whatever works for you! Alternatively give them a copy of your unique tippl QR code.

Can someone tip me if I didn't get to give them my code?

Potentially. If your employer provides a link to their tippl landing page (here's an example) a customer can easily find you through that and pay you a tip.

Will my bank details be secure?

Typically your employer will disburse payments (e.g., through payroll) in which case you do not need to provide your bank details to tippl at all. In any case, tippl does not store any bank details or billing information. If we do need your bank details these will be stored by a global payments infrastructure company who are PCI level 1 certified — the highest level of Payment Card Industry (PCI) certification.

Which countries do you operate in?

We work with businesses across Canada. People from any country can pay a tip.
